NWRHA: World Social Work Day 2018

On 20th March, 2018 the NWRHA joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Social Work Day 2018. The Region took the opportunity to salute its team of committed and client focused medical social workers located at each of the institutions under its purview. 
 
The NWRHA’s community of medical social workers play an ever significant role in the organization and their numerous contributions are essential to fulfilling its objectives. The following highlights their crucial role in the Region’s endeavour of efficient health care delivery.
 
Medical Social Work
 
Medical Social Work is a specialized field of social work particular to the health care sector which plays an integral part in health care management and delivery.
The medical social worker is part of the health care team aimed at providing intervention to support the client population and the adjustment to illnesses.
 
 
What is the role of the Medical Social Worker?
 
Medical social workers are a part of a mutli-disciplinary team and their role is to help clients and their families learn how to better manage a life crisis which may be as a result of acute or chronic medical conditions, as well as to encourage them to focus on improving their physical and mental well-being. The medical social worker also seeks to reduce financial burden of the patient and their family by being the voice of the client.
 
 
Other roles include:
  • Obtaining financial assistance from the Ministry of Health and Non-Governmental agencies 
  • Assessment of needs of the client whether social, emotional, environmental, financial and support needs
  • Advocating on clients behalf , between patients and the medical community
  • Providing counselling services not only to the clients but their loved ones also by using an integrative holistic approach 
 
How are clients referred to the Medical Social Work Department?
 
Referrals are made from their consultants or other members of the health care team via the clinic and from family members who may have concerns regarding the care and interests of clients. Patients also come in as walk-in clients.
The NWRHA’s multi-disciplined health care system has specialized areas of healthcare wherein the medical social work assistance rendered varies. The following indicates the reasons for referrals to the Medical Social Work department at the major institutions within the Region.

  • Pre surgical counselling
  • Domestic Violence intervention
  • Substance abuse intervention
  • Suicidal intervention
  • Bereavement intervention
  • Discharge Planning (Wheelchair/Walkers)
  • Referrals to County Medical Social Work & other non-governmental agencies
 
Maternity Department
  • Adoption
  • Infant abandonment
  • Child abuse
