Ministry of Health Advisory on Crab Meat
Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Port-of-Spain, July 18, 2018: The Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries issued a release advising the public "to avoid eating fresh crab meat from Venezuela as the US Food and Drug Agency says it may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus.”

Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness in humans. Persons who consume foods with these bacteria may experience diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, fever, and stomach pain.

The Chemistry/Food and Drugs Division (CFFD) of the Ministry of Health is at present investigating these claims and reviewing the relevant national import database to determine the sources and brands of crab meat being imported into Trinidad and Tobago from Venezuela.

The Ministry of Health will continue its market surveillance activities at retail and wholesale outlets to ensure that crab meat from Venezuela, if sold or distributed, is safe for human consumption.

Members of the public are advised to note that:
  • the Ministry of Trade and Industry is responsible for issuing import licenses
  • the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries is responsible for issuing import permits
  • the Ministry of Health is responsible for reviewing Certificates of Health ( issued by the Country of origin/export)
The public is asked to report any concerns relating to this matter to the CFFD via:
  • Phone: (868) 623-5242 or (868) 800-CFDD
  • Email: cfdd@health.gov.tt
Samples may also be brought into the Division which is located at #92 Frederick Street, Port of Spain.

Members of the public may also contact their County Medical Officer of Health.Q
