Minister of Health Represents Trinidad and Tobago at UN High-level Meetings
Thursday, September 27, 2018

Port of Spain, 27th September, 2018: The Honourable Terrence Deyalsingh, Minister of Health, is representing Trinidad and Tobago at the United Nations (UN) High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), today, Thursday 27th September, 2018, in New York.

Since the hosting of the first ever Summit on NCDs in 2007, which resulted in the signing of the Port of Spain Declaration, Trinidad and Tobago has continued to play a leading role in the regional fight against NCDs. The implementation of the strategies to combat the NCD epidemic continues to be high on the Ministry’s agenda. In 2017 the Ministry of Health launched the National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases - 2017-2021. The Cabinet of Trinidad and Tobago also took the decision to prohibit the sale or serving of sugar sweetened beverages (added sugars by manufacturers and other producers) in all government and government assisted schools.

On Wednesday 26th September, 2018 the Minister of Health also represented Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at the UN High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis (TB), in New York.

This was the first-ever UN high-level meeting on the fight against tuberculosis. The theme for the meeting was “United to end tuberculosis: an urgent global response to a global epidemic”.
The meeting focused on fast tracking the efforts to end TB and to ensure that all affected people receive care.

Participation in these meetings will support the achievement of the goals and objectives of the Ministry of Health and by extension, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Decisions taken at these meetings will impact directly on the functioning of the health system of Trinidad and Tobago, and the delivery of health services to the public.
