Project Summary: Laboratory Facilities

This project is funded by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago through the Ministry of Health. The executing agencies are the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO-WHO) together with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).


The new office and laboratory facility will co-locate the three below agencies on a common site, which will provide the opportunity to identify work spaces and systems that will benefit the operation of all three laboratories:

  • CARPHA – Caribbean Public Health Agency
  • NPHL – National Public Health Agency (Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago)
  • NBTS – National Blood Transfusion Services (Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago)


Purpose and Need for the Project:

There is a need to construct a new, modern, flexible, bright, comfortable, energy- efficient building that will give the three above mentioned laboratories the tools to perform and excel in their areas of knowledge, with the ability to share services between them to amplify the effectiveness of their activities. The purpose of the new facility will be to provide the space and equipment to offer a 24-hour service in public health for the country and the region. 


Project Location and Components:

The site identified for the construction of the facility is situated in Valsayn, thirteen kilometers east of Port of Spain. The total site area is: 32,884 m².
