World Hypertension Day 2019
Friday, May 17, 2019

Today the Ministry of Health joins the global population in commemoration of World Hypertension Day 2019. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition in which your blood pressure is persistently high.

Globally, increased blood pressure is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, causing 7.5 million deaths annually. Hypertension is considered the silent killer as it often has no symptoms. For this reason, the theme for 2019, “Know Your Numbers,” was chosen. Knowing your numbers through frequent monitoring is one way of managing high blood pressure. Furthermore, persons can easily access free screening and information at public health facilities. Early detection is the key to properly managing many health conditions.

If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure and given medication, please ensure compliance (take your medication as prescribed). There are also other simple measures you can take to lower your blood pressure numbers. For instance, decreasing your sodium, alcohol and caffeine consumption will result in immediate benefits. Lack of exercise, obesity and poor eating habits are also contributors to hypertension.

I want to implore everyone to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Make minor changes to your lifestyle that will result in major health benefits. Life threatening non communicable diseases can be prevented.

Together, we can attain a
Healthy Me…. A Healthy You and a Healthy T&T.
