Population Programme

The Population Programme Unit (PPU), a Vertical Unit of the Ministry of Health has the primary responsibility for the delivery of family planning services as a Vertical Programme under the Ministry of Health with its own staffing arrangements.


Services are currently provided at Family Planning Clinics by Sessional Nurses of the Population Programme Unit. These services include:

  1. Provision of a variety of contraceptive options including orals, injectables, IUCDs and condoms (Male & Female).

  2. Diagnostic screening services for pap smears/ cervical cancer screening.

  3. Referrals to Specialist Medical services.

  4. Pregnancy Testing.

  5. Family Life and Sexual Health counselling.

  6. Condom promotion and distribution.

  7. Promotion of breast self examination.


While Emergency Contraceptive (EC) is not formally a service offered, at the Family Planning Clinics the contraceptive commodity is made available to the County Medical Officers of Health/District Medical Officers for their management.

Questions and Answers on Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH)

What is SRH?

SRH is the acronym for Sexual and Reproductive Health. It can be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being in all matters related to the reproductive system. It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so.


Who provides SRH services?

At present, the Ministry of Health offers these services with the Population Programme Unit in collaboration with the Family Planning Association of Trinidad and Tobago. Similar services are offered at the QPCC&C (Queen's Park Counseling Centre & Clinic, and at health centres/clincs through the RHAs.

What services are offered at the Health Centers/Clinics?             

Pap Smears, Counselling, Brest Examinations, issuing of Contraceptive Supplies, Pregnancy Testing, Cervical Cancer screening, STI screening.
