Laboratory Services

Services Offered

  • Analysis of food, drugs, cosmetics, (medical) devices for compliance with the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations to ensure safety, efficacy and fitness for use as intended.
  • Analysis of pesticides and toxic chemicals for compliance with the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Act and Regluations, and
  • Analytical and advisory support to the Customs and Excise Division; and
    • Alcohol content of alcoholic beverages to determine Excise Duty; and
    • Analysis of other imported products to determine customs tariff classification.
  • Analytical and advisory support to the Director of Contracts to determine composition and efficacy to enable objective comparison of products during the tendering process.



How to Submit a Sample for Analysis

  1. Submit two (2) sample of each product:
    - at least 100g each
    - commercially packaged
    - list of ingredients
  2. Receive payment voucher for cost of:
    - Microbiological Analyses
    - Chemical Analyses
  3. Pay at:
    i)  Any District Revenue Office (Warden's Office)
    ii) Ministry of Health (corner Park and Edward Street)
    Note: Cheque payments in f/o:
    Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health
  4. Return to the Chemistry Food and Drugs Division with payment receipt for Analyses
    (OR call to give relevant receipt information)
    Note:
    i)  Analyses will only be started upon proof of payment
    ii) Generally, Laboratory Reports will be available within 14 to 21 working days

  5. Collect Laboratory Reports at
    Chemistry / Food & Drugs Division
    #115 Frederick Street,
    Port-of-Spain

  6. If reports are satisfactory, proceed to:
    Food & Drugs Inspectorate
    #92 Frederick Street,
    Port-of-Spain

  7. If reports are unsatisfactory: Advice will be provided accordingly
