Nursing Services

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. It includes the promotion of health, the prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people (ICN, 2010).

There are several categories of nursing strategically placed in order to fulfil these roles and meet the needs of the population. Some of them are as follows:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Midwife
  • District Health Visitor
  • District Nurse
  • School Nurse
  • Psychiatric Nurse
  • Oncology Nursing
  • Infection Control Nurse
  • Trauma and Emergency Nurse
  • Critical Care Nurse
  • Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Practice Nurse
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist

The key roles and functions of the National Administrator, Nursing Services include the following:

  1. To provide strategic leadership and guidelines for Nursing and Midwifery Education and Practice and in Trinidad and Tobago.
  2. To facilitate the implementation and achievement of National Health objectives and goals.
  3. To recommend strategies for the improvement of patient care services.
  4. To develop strategies for maintaining clinical and patient care standards.
  5. To work closely with the Ministry of Health Senior Executive Management Team.
  6. To advise on strategies to improve the standard of care at Health care facilities.
  7. To establish new policies and guidelines for Nursing operations and patient care.
  8. To identify and develop national nursing and midwifery capacity and capability to deliver positive patient outcomes.
