Minister of Health Conducts Site Visit at the San Fernando General Hospital and San Fernando Teaching Hospital

Port of Spain, May 6, 2025: Today, Dr the Honourable Lackram Bodoe, Minister of Health, undertook an unannounced visit to the San Fernando General Hospital and the San Fernando Teaching Hospital to gain a first-hand understanding of the current conditions and engage directly with frontline healthcare professionals.

During the visit, the Minister expressed concern following the observation of significant infrastructural deterioration across various sections of the hospital. He noted that healthcare staff were operating under challenging conditions, which could potentially compromise both patient care and staff wellbeing. Nonetheless, Minister Bodoe acknowledged the commendable morale and dedication of the staff despite the challenges.

He further expressed disappointment that areas previously allocated for teaching and clinical training had been converted for administrative use, thereby depriving students of valuable hands-on learning opportunities in a clinical environment. The Minister also observed the underutilisation and visible decline of certain levels, such as level 18, raising broader concerns regarding maintenance and operational oversight.

In response to these findings, Minister Bodoe reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the public healthcare system. He stated: “Our patients and medical professionals deserve facilities that reflect our dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare”.
