IVCD Operations

From routine surveillance to emergency spraying, IVCD operations follow standard protocols to protect communities and use resources efficiently.

Core Pillars

What Our Operations Include

The Insect Vector Control Division conducts a range of operational activities that support national vector surveillance, control and response efforts. These include entomological monitoring, adult and larval control measures, laboratory diagnostics and field investigations. Learn more about these operations in the sections below.

Vector Control Measures

Adulticiding (eliminating adult mosquito populations): ULV spraying, thermal fogging (Malathion), Indoor Residual Spraying (Bifenthrin)

Larviciding (eliminating the mosquito larva): Breeding site elimination, Aquatain. Discontinued use of Temephos after CARPHA resistance testing.

Laboratory and Diagnostics

Our lab performs malaria microscopy , entomological and parasitological activities, and participates in research with external partners like CARPHA and UWI.

Public Education and Community Engagement

We collaborate with Communications and Health Education Departments to raise public awareness.

  • Community outreach programmes
  • School sensitization sessions
  • Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week activities

Collaboration

We work with national and international partners to coordinate responses to vector-borne disease threats.

  • Ministry of Rural Development & Local Government
  • Regional Health Authorities (RHAs)
  • CARPHA and PAHO

Entomological Surveillance

We conduct continuous monitoring and detection activities to track vector populations and identify breeding sites.

  • Use of ovitraps
  • Larval surveys
  • Adult trapping
